In this edition of the UN
Chronicle E-Alert, we feature articles from past issues relevant to World
Press Freedom Day, commemorated each year on 3 May, and to the theme of
the third seminar in the Unlearning Intolerance educational series of the
United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI): ¡§Fanning the Flame
of Tolerance: The Role of the Media¡¨, which will be held at United Nations
Headquarters in New York on 3 May 2005 from 9:50 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in
Conference Room 2.
The seminar, which will also see the release of the "Ten Stories the World
Should Hear More About¡¨¡X an annual list by DPI that shines a spotlight on
some of the important international issues and developments that often do
not get sufficient media attention¡Xwill examine ways to counter the
effects of hate media and how the media can, should and, indeed, does
educate people by ¡§fanning the flame of tolerance¡¨ through reporting and
confronting manifestations of intolerance around the world.
