| 2004.05.16 | Mississauga Marathon 2004 | Toronto, Canada |
It was a bright and
beautiful Sunday morning, May 16, 2004, a group of enthusiastic people
from the Mississauga Buddhism Youth Group and I were cheering for the
marathon runners. This was the Mississauga Marathon 2004 presented by
Canon to raise funding for The Credit Valley Hospital Foundation. The Credit Valley Hospital delivers health care services to close to 2 million people in Peel, Halton, Dufferin, Simcoe, Wellington and GTA West. We were allocated at one of the 17 aid station. Our jobs were to well organize all the cups filled up with water and Gatorade on the table. When the runners ran by, we had to hand out the drinks to them. Besides, we also have to clean up the garbage from the ground to clear out the space for them to run by. It was such an event! We all dropped our jaw when we saw the runners came towards us a beeline all of a sudden. It was very amazing to see the participants were from different age groups and races, but we do all share the same goal which is to contribute to the society. We are very fortunate to be able to do that. This marathon includes Mississauga 10K, Fila Half Marathon, Rayovac 10K, Mississauga Family 2K Fun Run/Walk, Corporate Relay Challenge and Student Relay. Over $25000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. A total of 5610 runners took part, not to mention over 600 volunteers that came out to help. Among the winners were Shingirai Badza, from Hamilton, Ontario who was the top male in the marathon with a time of 2:24:37.5, and Mississauga's own Martie Dunning, the top female in the marathon event with a time of 3:02:28.6. All of us had so much fun from this event, and felt so good about ourselves because we have helped unfortunate others. We are looking forward to getting involved into more community and charity events in the near future. |
