“Three Acts of Goodness” Children‘s Art Competition

Sri Lanka

To foster a child’s personality and give guidance to uphold strong ethical and moral standards during the childhood period, BLIA Sri Lanka organized an art competition on the theme of the “Three Acts of Goodness – Good Action, Good Speech and Good Thoughts” in which 98 students from grades 1 to 6 participated.

The event was held after the stationery distribution at the Sri Saranakararamaya temple on December 24th, 2008. From the children’s drawings, we could see the good behavior envisioned in their minds, including being helpful to the poor and weak, showing respect to their parents, and protecting the environment. Over 90 percent of the 98 drawings showed significant expressions: a 6th grader drew a picture showing how to “protect our environment,” a 5th grader drew one “paying respect to mother,” a 4th grader displayed “feeding animals,” a 2nd grader created someone “helping the blind to cross the road,” and a first grader made picture of “worshipping the Buddha.”

To give encouragement to the students, prizes including mathematics set-square, ball-point pens, colored pencils, and toys were given to the best likenesses of Acts of Goodness expressed in drawings and colorings from five students in each grade. Those who did not win any prize also received a small packet of chocolate
