The festival was led off by a vibrant traditional lion dance, followed by inspirational Buddhist world peace blessing ceremonies and Offering ritual services. Among the distinguished guests were Federal Member of Chisholm, the Hon. Anna Burke, State Member of Box Hill, the Hon. Robert Clark, Mayor of City of Whitehorse, Cr. Robert Chong, Councilors of City of Whitehorse and representatives from the Chinese community. In his welcome speech, James Yang, President of the Buddha's Light International Association of Victoria wished every visitor joy and happiness. He emphasized that the primary aim of Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA) is to promote Humanistic Buddhism. He also gave his heart-felt thanks to all the supporters, members and volunteers who helped make the festival successful. Distinguished guests gave high regards to the work of Buddha's Light International Association of Victoria. In their speeches, they all commended that Buddhism brings peace and harmony to our society, and encouraged BLIA members to continue contributing a tolerant and multicultural-aware local community. The Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Melbourne, Venerable Man Chien, reminded us that the Buddha was born in the world, achieved enlightenment in the world, and the Buddha told us that every person has his or her own Buddha nature to become a Buddha. Venerable Man Chien encouraged the visitors to practise Buddhism, maintain a good heart, uphold good speech and perform good deeds in our daily life so as to achieve our Buddhahood. The vegetarian food tasting stalls attracted thousands of people and so did the fun fair activities and performances. Young and old, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike all enjoyed the Chinese cultural dances, martial arts, Tai Chi, dances by the Fo Guang Chinese School kids, and demonstration of Ch'an tea, art and crafts, and lots more. SBS Radio (Cantonese and Mandarin groups) also made on-site broadcasting. They made interviews and conducted games with the visitors. |
